"Politics and the Christian Witness -- Part 2"

The system from which the world operates must be respected even though we may disagree with the policies. There are many things in this world that must be tolerated, yet respect does not mean that we are confined to silence and inactivity. One can disagree but respectfully disagree with the world. This will afford those who see things differently to have a voice to speak to power. God raises up those who are in power, even those who are abusive in their administration of it. He allows pressures to be brought to bear against the righteous but always with an ultimate intention. It brings to surface the disposition of the hearts of men and women. Since it is impossible for any individual to fully know what exists within the heart, circumstances will give expression to that which lies within. Only when the sins have fully developed will the grapes of wrath be ripe for harvest. This biblical parallel speaks of sin as grapes that have reached their maturation.

We may wonder why our economy is in such straits as today, why the moral fiber of our nation and the world has degenerated, and why is crime out of control. There are wars on several fronts without military strength and wisdom to bring an end to the chaos that we are currently involved. None of this is coincidental. The questions and the searching for answers where there appear to be no answers was strategically orchestrated by God to give a voice to those who in the past were voiceless. The authentic gospel of Jesus Christ is a message of truth that should be spoken to power. There are unidentifiable longings within those who sense that something else is wrong but they just cannot identify it. Unfortunately, many messages are tailored to the felt needs of the people that merely pacify but do not reach that deepest part of the soul.

But when the system of the world reaches a point of collapse, there is a need for a trusted source to bring definite answers and resolve to what otherwise would be the ultimate of devastation. The kings of the earth or the powers that be whether they are the accepted religious, political, and all civic leaders will hopefully be open to the prophetic word of God.

What prophetic message would be delivered by those who see things differently? The message that, “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). No longer will God’s truth be confined to Sunday morning services among the professionals and ceremonial worship remain the order. There will be a deep searching for the meaning of life and personhood that could only come through those who understand what it means to seek the Lord and lead both leaders and followers into that level of pursuit. Our political strategies will not work alone. It does not matter what promises are made by politicians and hope raised by the potential for change. Unless a radical from within people who influence other people sameness by default will follow the good intentions of seemingly change agents. This kind of change will result in a difference in how we view the Church and our religious affiliations because it will eliminate the options of choices available to decide what we think is best for us.

It will no longer be about what we want or think that we need rather, what God wants and know that we need. Our faith is not an addendum to our lives but the justified shall live by faith. The only way for this to become a reality is there has to be an environment where faith in God is deemed to be an absolute necessity. These are the days and the conditions that could very well lead us into this direction. But will we have ears to hear, eyes to see, and hearts to understand when there is no where else to turn?
